Girls Who Code @ WPL

This semester we’re facilitating the Girls Who Code (GWC) club at Winter Park Library. We’re meeting Wednesday evenings between September 3rd to December 17th. Here is the public notice if interested. Note that the club targets tweens aged ~10-13.

After an intro meeting, our club members will be working in Scratch and Javascript (first one, then the other), then working on personal projects using one of those technologies. For our final meeting, club members will present their projects to the public! We plan on making games, animations, art, etc.; anything that uses algorithms and logic to produce visuals on the screen in a fun or interesting way 🙂

For Javascript, we’ve decided to use the p5.js community and editor, as recommended by Girls Who Code. This community has a history and aim rooted in the Processing community, with online Javascript editor designed to engage technical artists.

The Girls Who Code club curriculum is cool in that it promotes several programming languages and provide ideas for various projects in each of them. Even if we don’t use the curriculum every week, we show club members how to login and access it directly, so they can do so at home or in the future on their own. This way we can use it as a guide or additional resource to whatever we are presenting in any given meeting. The GWC curriculum also hosts a section of “spotlight” videos and articles highlighting influential women in computing. These are really great motivators and are much appreciated!
