Cacti Council Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by a group of educators whose main mission is to promote critical and creative thinking concepts in education through computer science and its related disciplines.

At Cacti Council, we create teaching materials and curricula to be used at all grade levels (including college) and run in-school and after-school programs to teach kids the basics of computer science. We also foster open-source development with these same goals in mind. Our organization was founded in 2016 by educators and practitioners of computer science and programming, and it works closely with the tech community and universities throughout the Central Florida area in order to build resources and recruit volunteers.

In classrooms we use fun, accessible platforms for learning computer science, such as Google’s Ignite-CS, Code.org’s Hour of Code activities, and Pencil Code. Beyond classrooms we provide opportunities for advanced programming activities for students, such as our bot coding extension of id’s DOOM 3 engine, BuddyBots. We are always investigating new resources to share with students as well. We provide professional (soft skill) guidance to students, promoting proper business etiquette, good teamwork, and communication skills. When appropriate, parents are encouraged to join their children at our workshops, working along side them as they learn. We have collaborated with Orange County Public Schools and the City of Orlando Family, Parks and Recreation Division in the Central Florida Region. We have also run workshops for the Orlando Science Center.

Our purpose is to promote critical and creative thinking concepts and disciplines in education, industry, commerce, civil service, and other areas of public and/or social import. If this is something you would like to learn more about or get involved with, please reach out to us as we are always seeking new volunteers!
